There's actually a lot of people who argue that e.g. the 20th century should be considered to be 1991-2000 because of this and the 21st century started in 2001. Those people are silly.
Also most of the bedrock technology that everything is based off was developed by NASA, the US Military, CERN, universities and the Soviet Union, not free market competition.
