you're absolutely right, they're not the same, at least not yet.
I still use firefox, because they still allow adblockers and also partly ideological reasons; i don't want there to just be one rendering engine that exists. But i'm not under any illusion that mozilla is not evil.
If we take Cory Doctorow's framework, they're still in the "be good to your users to get them to use you" or early in the "slightly enshitify to please your business clients" phase, and aren't nearly as far down as chromium is yet.
Mozilla gets (got!!!) most of its money from google to use google as the default search engine, but they've seen the writing on the wall for a while and have tried to diversify their income stream from that.
Unfortunately that means they've kind of abandoned their main claim to fame, "we respect your privacy more than chrome does" because they need to make money and they've chosen to get in to the same business as google. Sort of rational for them but a terrible shame for all of us.

Most of the time it doesn't do anything, and I only report people who are very blatantly over the line. The polite hate speech couched in "reasonable concerns and the spirit of open debate" is still rampant.
I posted there once by using google translate and they were extremely nice in reply but I didn't feel like it would be good to do that too often so I haven't posted there since.
The chapo sub hated the podcast and the podcast hated them. It was kind of funny.
But it was one of the best leftist sibs on reddit (low bar). It was completely immune from right wing brigades and trolls because any time they came in trying to stir up shit people would just all post "show hog" and they'd get mad that no one was taking the bait.
It being banned was sad but also not that sad. Reddit sucks and km barely on there anymore except to argue with people that homeless people are human beings and not vermin. I don't know why I bother anymore.
Yeah SRS was kind of crappy but it got me from being an edgy shit head who found right wing redditors to be annoying, to at least being introduced to the concepts of feminism and anti racism in a way that wasn't just "they're bad" and made me more willing to learn more. I'm glad it existed.
