Reply to Book Recommendations? by Jenheadjen
Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas is a wide ranging overview of slot machines and the people involved with them, like designers, gamblers, casino operators, regulators, executives etc. It's shockingly deep on the subject while also being clear and easy to read. And also like, apocalyptic.
You understand by reading it that the effect slot machines have on people is that they'll sit at them and don't want to be disturbed, and keep spending to the point where they can't gamble any more money. All the rest of the people in the book who aren't gamblers construct elaborate fantasies where that's not what this is all about.
Once you read it you start seeing slot machines everywhere, like so many things function like a slot machine does. So many things are allowed to exist using similar methods to how slot machines work. It can be a very depressing book, but there's something extremely illuminating about it. I came out it feeling better prepared to live life in the world the way it is.

The thing about JKR stuff is that he might not fully understand the transphobia involved. Is this an isolated incident, or is he not supporting your friend in other ways?
We're at a moment of reaction to trans rights, where opponents of LGBT people in general are looking for whatever hooks they can get to wind stuff back. That includes pretending that JKR was attacked out of nowhere, a sort of spiritual "definition of a woman" thing that is ultimately very conservative, and this targeting children thing that twists helping kids with abusive parents into something insidious. Your friend's dad is falling for that, because it's a specific message targeted at twisting his morals this way. All you can hope is that he loves his kid more than whatever this is.

Reply to hi everyone. my weather app said there would be a 90% chance of rain today, but ive yet to see a drop. by I_got_killed_one_time
Back when the app Dark Sky first launched it would predict rain when there wasn't any coming all the time. Considering that most of the cool features of the app involved rain, it gave this feeling like the app was really excited about rain and jumped the gun.

Intelligent Qube is an early PS1 game where you play as a little guy blowing up cubes with the right timing to clear out other cubes. One of my favorites, simple to play but addictive and hard to master, the look is extremely cool, and the music is incredible and not what you'd expect at all. Just an insanely good use of the Playstation and plays great on the RG35XX.
The RG35XX is in a real sweet spot, I think. What made me pick it is that I was specifically looking to play game boy games, and it's a really cool bonus that it plays PS1 games. It's cheaper than other options, and powerful enough to play through that entire library. The big competitor is the Miyoo Mini Plus that's coming out soon, but it's going to be harder to get and it's a little less powerful. Both of these handhelds have a cool community that offers things like custom software and hardware mods which is cool.
Another cool option is the ANBERNIC RG353M, which has joysticks for the ps1 games that use them and can play Dreamcast games, but that's twice the price of the RG35XX. I'd consider it if it played up to PS2 and Gamecube games but it doesn't.
Retro Game Corps has a great video covering other options, but in general if you want to emulate more than a PS1 you're gonna start getting less convenient, more expensive devices if you want to play all the games you'd want to, until you eventually just get to a Steam Deck. And like a Steam Deck is really cool but I don't need that to play Chono Trigger Lol
