I've got a Coway Airmega, they have a few models that are about $200 that do basically the same thing and seem to be just what everyone gets. They're quiet on the low setting, don't use that much electricity, so I can just run it 24/7. Built like a tank. That might be what you want.

Air purifiers are still worth it, because they come with stuff like pre-filters that remove larger particles before they get stuck and are generally quieter. But yeah, nothing wrong a box fan.
