it seemed beyond dispute that sixty years ago some of these gooners would have been fathers. Small-business owners.

Funnily they do make good points; like when was the last time Reimu's gohei become important and relevant gameplay-wise actually in the mainline games? Touhou 14 I guess but even then you can just either play as Marisa or Sakuya there or use the other ReimuB that doesn't use her gohei (you could also do a no focus no bombs run with ReimuA since it's only the focused shot and bomb that uses her gohei). Other than that game it leaves us with.. Touhou 1. Where the button used for bombing in later games is simply Reimu waving her gohei. A simple but important gameplay mechanic to precisely deflect her yin-yang ball falling to her.

Another part I could kinda agree with is how boring the midboss and boss fights are in (Windows) Touhou, where you just align yourself horizontally to the boss to maximize damage, and you and the boss barely move, outside of survival spell cards. Funnily again this vindicates my belief of Touhou 2 being peak Touhou (even Touhou 4 and 5 unfortunately suffer a bit from this problem in a few stages, probably because TH04 introduced focused movement, but still not as bad as Windows era); because in that game you and the boss do move a lot. Stage 3 perhaps is the best example of this, where the boss isn't just one single area you need to shoot at and you have to move a lot. Touhou 2, being supposedly a parody of the STG genre (like Touhou 1 was a parody of Arkanoid), ironically ends up being the best representation of STG of all Touhous!
