What about WordPress? It seems customisable and independent enough that you don't have to fuck around with likes and reblogs etc.

P.S. to see a first hand example of my level of techitude, see my custom styles for jstpst.net - Saturn Valley or something. I use it solely for this site and it imitates the save file and character creation screens of EarthBound. Also, mint green and light blue squares are objectively the most delicious looking background graphic possible. I would sincerely wear a t-shirt based on EarthBound save file and character creations screens!

it's cute because both players play using the same DS, it's just a timing game where you each hold it, one player uses L and one uses R to hit the ball. Surprisingly good fun :D

if you're playing on an actual DS, the ping pong minigame in WarioWare Touched is silly and fun for a bit. Gotta unlock it first though and it's the only multiplayer part of that game iirc.

New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 64 DS came with a lot of great minigames. IIRC they take very little (no?) language, but I last played ~15 years ago. Extra great because of DS download play. (Peer-to-peer connection, no online services needed.)
Mario Kart is also a classic.

I have a long-running joke with the younger sister of a friend of my sister's, where each Christmas the friend of my sister tries to set me up with her based on the fact that "I run a feminist social network". I'm pretty sure everyone involves knows that thefempire.org is years-dead.

i told my mom i co-run a small community website (here) but she barely knows how to talk to people online so probably doesn’t really very clearly understand what that means
and my brother has his own circles
also yeah we’re never going to be a big platform, that’s what reddit is for

yeah lol. i dont tell my family about my online stuff in any detail. Online and Offline are completely different realms for me. i would never bring online stuff into my irl life unless it would be anonymous or 100% unrelated to existing relationships, and vice versa feels incredibly inappropriate
moreover i cant imagine jstpst ever being a Big Platform. if jstpst was made to be a Big Website then jstpst would be totally unappealing

if you go the self hosted route i like jekyll for this purpose. you can host entirely on github pages which is where i host teatimer.site (although i don't use jekyll for that, it's too simple to need jekyll)
