Kevin Can F**k Himself is a dark-comedy which uses the lens of both a sitcom and a drama to tell its story. The sitcom part is played faithfully and melds surprisingly well with its decent drama offering.
The gist is this: Allison is a sitcom wife who, after years of with her husband's "antics", finally snaps. The sitcom part of the show revolves around Kevin, with the usual lovable sitcom man antics. He plays through the usual tropes, including the usual sexism (bitch wife won't stop nagging him!) but everyone in his life has to put up with it.
Once Kevin leaves the room? The cinematography turns dramatic. We're not in the sitcom, and Allison is left to deal with it.
It's a show that puts a name to a specific type of narcissistic abuse. The r/KevinCanFHimself subreddit is filled with people whose eyes are being opened up by the show.
Here's a post from the subreddit from yesterday. There are countless posts like this:
Ever since I saw this show I couldn’t get it out of my head. I really resonated with Alison. After seven years, I left last week. I couldn’t unsee it. And I couldn’t do it anymore.
This show doesn't just give a name to a type of male abuse, it also is a radical breakdown of the sitcom genre and the sexist culture that brough it to flourish.
The sitcom part of the show isn't played "like a sitcom", it is a sitcom. Everybody Loves Raymond, Family Guy, etc. By showing Allison's side of the story, the sitcom part plays like a horror, but it is faithfully full of a lot of humor built around humiliating women.
TLDR: Kevin Can Fk Himself is a good show, and is a pretty solid piece of Feminism**
