I really like Advance Wars if there's a async mp game on PC or Android like that though the friend I want to play with would probably be more into deck building game type stuff.

https://en.boardgamearena.com/ has a bunch of board games u can play online for free and while it doesn't work great with all of them, I think they all support asynchronous play
