looks like some alternate internet invite only platform that's basically tumblr, and also the only place that thinks about posting more than we do

well... fun development since my maybe kind of mean comment: there's talk it's made by a bunch of fediverse bad actors who left because they were upset when their instance got blocked by a bunch of people of color telling them to stop being racist, after they continued to be racist. i didn't have a lot of trust to begin with but now that level of trust is zero for me lmao

Can you link to someone talking about this? There's a popular "mastadon failed so we're trying this" post that I thought had good points, and I'd rather not go off of vague rumors about this kind of thing.
Edit: yeah everything I've seen from the founders looks cool to me, and a lot of what they want is freedom to actually control nazis and terfs that you can't get on mastadon, so I don't know what all this is about

i'm afraid i don't have the emotional energy to relitigate some history that was traumatic for several of us at the moment, or to ask for receipts from those who were traumatized. maybe this weekend.

Oh yeah I understand. I'm excited for cohost, which is why I'd like to know what's up, if you're able to. All love Holly!

The ideas behind the platform seems solid, but I'm getting exhausted. Everyone has their own take on what social media should be. I'm already in the process of phasing out my Reddit and Hacker News usage.
On top of jstpst (love this place 😘), lobste.rs, tildes.net, the Fediverse, Lemmy (strictly part of the Fediverse but doesn't fully interoperate, hence the need for an account), various forums, and my IndieWeb site: I have another piece of social media.
I think that if someone wants me to consider their social media platform, it needs to do at least two of the following:
- Be small/inactive enough to not reward excessive attention, but not so small that I feel like I'm talking to myself. There's a grey area somewhere in between.
- Interoperate with other social networks so I don't have to actually join it (the Fediverse, the IndieWeb)
- Have an unusually nice community
So I hope Cohost does well, but I don't think I have it in me to give it a try unless I hear good news of at least two of the above. I'll ask around in a week.

nevermind I'll give it a try, nobody's forcing me to stay if i don't like it.

It kinda brings me back to the time of phpBB and proboards and whatnot. I loved having all these tiny forums, sometimes run by some narcissistic teenager, etc.
Now people are building their social media from scratch which is kinda rad. Jstpst has been my favorite place to post

The privacy policy is good! I read it: https://cohost.org/rc/content/privacy
It lists types of personal information, including ones it does not even collect. Notably, they include keystrokes under biometric information. This is a rare and non-obvious insight!
A quick look at their posts also tell me they're cool and good. Thank u for sharing this new site to post on
EDIT: Yeah I skimmed out the admins and their manifesto and stuff. Very good, very in line with the community we have here
EDIT: One thing is they have a binding arbitration and class action waiver, and you can't opt out of. This is shitty, and they're implicitly banking on the far-right US Supreme Court here. (Not that Dems are much more consumer friendly.) Kind of surprised to see this
