I sometimes feel like I don't know how to use anything but Linux, and want to branch out. But, windows wasn't any good when I quit using it (last windows version I used was XP lmao) and every time I see a new version it seems to be getting worse. I had to help my mom out on hers and the damn thing had ads in the start menu, what the hell is that?
always assumed they just included those so they wouldn't hurt the feelings of the windows 8 team
Lol, its really more a windows mobile thing. a big part of windows 10 was that you could write apps that would work on windows mobile, xbox, and windows pc at the same time. "universal windows platform". it became clear that no one was going to do this almost immediately, with mobile failing and xbox refocusing on gaming
a big part of why windows 11 exists at all is to remove all the stuff tied to uwp
Windows 10 was really neat because in 2016 it was FINALLY catching up to Linux DEs, with things like multiple desktops and whatnot.

This is a fork and idk for sure if it's still considered trustworthy, but I use it. It will break a lot of things like the Xbox app though.
I don't recommend using Windows unless you absolutely need to. IME it does nothing better than my Linux distros except NTFS support and some software.
would you broadly recommend switching from windows 10 to windows 11? removing some of the cruft seems nice, and I just sort of assume that updates have allowed 10 to be as maximally predatory as it can be (so I assume 11 probably isn't worse in that regard?)
no, there's too many bugs, but in like two years it'll be an easy recommendation. the settings app is much nicer, it fixed some display switching issues I had, and otherwise it works just like 10

what's yur cpu? I have a Ryzen 3600 and I had to turn on a weird security feature in my motherboard bios to install it
intel i5-6600k. its older than ryzen yet good enough that there's no game that like i struggle to play so upgrading it and the motherboard would make no sense whatsoever.

it just seems weird to me that with hardware that there is no reason to upgrade, its not supported
it's some security stuff, that you might be able to fix with like a dongle or something if you really wanted to down the line. it also makes the developers happy to not have to support older hardware. and of course it's to push people to buy a new laptop lol
honestly i feel like i'd rather just use it as an excuse to try and ditch windows than bother to buy a dongle. but im pretty sure the processor itself isn't supported at all, so even if i got the dongle it would do nothing for me.
