i don't see why image manipulations wouldn't be fine as long as if it's triggery you tag it (e.g. body horror)

I wouldn't worry about it being too on the nose, I have another character who is the captain of a ship. I'm calling them "Captain".

gotta be honest with u here... i would smooch.... all of them.......... that's the basis of how im designing characters so far, it's 'gonna draw some cartoon chaarcters id like 2 smooch'

I use Krita! I really really love the bristles_wet for painting, and layout_circle_soft just in general. I've downloaded the couple of brush packs available but I've not found anything mind-blowing in any of them. Let me know if you wind up with any favorites!
