No cat wants to be filthy, thus it's your responsibility to keep your cat clean. Your cat needs to be groomed frequently to stay clean and healthy. Brushing is the first step in grooming since it prevents the cat's hair from balling up. Brushing will get rid of any loose hair and reduce the chance of developing hairballs. Many cats struggle to get hairballs out. A hairball that the cat can't pass could cause an obstruction in the intestines. Blockages are extremely hazardous and can soon endanger your pet's life.
Cats with long hair require daily brushing and combing, but cats with short hair just require weekly grooming. Always keep an eye out for lumps in the coat and skin irritations when brushing your cat. Starting at the cat's head and working your way down to his tail, begin brushing his back. Repeat this several times on one side before moving to the other. Brushing each area many times in the direction that your cat's hair is growing is recommended.
