the thing about drtz was just makin stuff, you know? it was about making stuff to make stuff and I would just vomit ideas and with the exception of I think one page once, I included everything I drew. planning is good but making is better, my most favourite pages were the ones where I had an opening and didn't know where I was going until the end, like the one where every day I get abducted by aliens.

anyway the point of this ramble is: don't read this zine -- MAKE ONE!

their recent dial a songs have been consistently putting out flippin amazing stuff, and this reminds me to catch up on this year's

my entry would be on the use of physical space to restrict recording devices - a facehugging hood where the display is a couple of tiny screens held right in front of the eyeballs, and the hood must detect a pulse to display any video, meaning there would be no space to slide a camera in to record the screen with.

that is one tru thing!

this reminds me of one of my favourite penn and teller routines where the magic happens entirely in the mind of one person

I agree that with modern cartoons we've really never had it better. thank goodness for adventure time!

god trying to think of games for this it's so flipping obvious i have a "type"

in no particular order:

• a dark souls: yeah they have a rep for being really unfriendly, but I think that's partly because you kind of need to learn how to enjoy them, but if you do "get" them, they're really satisfying. I'd recommend 2 because it's the most accessible (and it's the best, forget the haters) but I've heard bloodborne is also very good. Probably a try before you buy situation though because if you don't get them, you don't get them. Each one usually lasts about 20-30 hours in my experience.

• Dead Cells: it's just a really fast and fun 2d action platformer with really slick combat, lovely art and just a general good time. It's one of those "roguelikes" the kids have nowadays so no real "completion", but you can play it in very short bursts or for longer. I'd also probably suggest Risk of Rain and Enter the Gungeon for similar feelings, they're all very very good, but Dead Cells is probably my fave and I'd be doubling up on games that fill a very similar role.

• Shadowrun: Dragonfall is the best single player story based videogame in existence. Shadowrun is one of my favourite settings, and it's one of the very few RPGs I've come across that does difficult moral choices correctly: a lot of the time it's whether you want to do a shady thing or not get paid, but it works well. And a lot of the time doing the nice thing makes your job a lot harder. Takes maybe 15 - 20 hours? Idk because when I finished it the first time I immediately started a new save and began playing again.

• Gotcha Force: this is a rare 2003-ish gamecube game and there's a reason it commands pretty high prices on places like ebay. It's a really fun and cute arena shooty type game where you collect toy-sized robots and have them fight. I love it! Takes about 12-16 hours to finish a playthrough, there are 8 different playthroughs with slightly different story bits and pieces, and the collection aspect can keep you going for years if you fancy.

• Audiosurf: I prefer the original over 2, but it's just a fun and relaxing game that I play a lot when I want to listen to music more than just background noise but also do something at the same time. No playthrough time, you use your own songs. It's great and I've been playing it for like a decade at this point.

• battlerite: just, the best videogame ever made. it's a top down 2v2 or 3v3 arena game with vaguely moba-esque gameplay stripped right down to just fights. I love it.

• dawngate: rip :(

but my actual favourite isn't explained super well here and I wouldn't have known what it was had I not recognised it. it's the tic-tac-toe one.

iirc it was an attempt to make the best tic-tac-toe AI, but to make it non trivial they put it on an infinite playing field since that hasn't been solved. One of the AIs was a learning AI, and it figured out that if it made its starting move extremely far away from the starting point, the other computer would try to render a massive playing field, run out of memory before it loaded, crash, and then the timeout would be considered a victory.

I love the ones which are like teenagers who are mad at their parents, "Oh you want me to evolve the highest possible speed? *grows really tall and falls forwards, thus achieving great speed but totally not doing what the creator actually wanted* ha owned"

yeah applying this to art seems like a silly idea, a good ending can save a bad thing, like the secret good last sherlock episode

also I think they're trying to refer to the sunk cost fallacy, but that's not the case in their example, the sunk cost fallacy is about bailing before spending more money but after having received the results. In this case you haven't actually received everything you've paid for yet (i.e. the whole show), so it's not comparable.
