yeah that's exactly it. specifically, the spartan IIs
the spartan IIIs (who make the majority of the main characters in reach) were recruited from orphans
the spartan IVs (halo 4, 5, infinite multiplayer spartans were recruited from willing adults
the spartan IIs are the ones who are agender. but this isn't "good representation", let alone representation at all

Are they really a gender? Or are they just raised totally unconnected from that? I guess if you raised them in an environment that had no meaning for the term gender at all that might count, but I don't know. That's a toughie.

"Spartan is a gender" is kind of a joke yeah, but they were pretty much raised detached from the rest of society and with no opportunity for identity or self-expression.
