Microsoft is really desperate for people to use their terrible search engine. Let's look at some of microsoft's cynical attempts to drive users towards Bing so far:
- Most notably, the start menu search in Windows 10 uses Bing and requires a registry hack or group policy or something to turn off (idk about 11, but it's probably worse)
- A lot of links in the windows settings are actually just links to Bing search queries with very carefully curated results.
- Out of like 4 features in Notepad, one of those them is a 'search with bing' option with its own keyboard shortcut
- If you install Office 365 in some circumstances, it would install a Chrome plugin that changed the default search engine to Bing
- They've given
KanyeTay a fresh coat of paint and integrated it into Bing with terrifying results to capitalise on the chatgpt hype. Officially this is not what's happened, but let's be real, this is probably what they've done.
Some of these are like really bad, like the 365 thing and the whole trapping most computer users into sending local search queries off to MS unless you know exactly how to disable it is bad. The links in the Windows settings are incredibly deceptive, too.
But this is just the beginning.
I predict we'll begin to see the following changes across Microsoft products:
- Windows 12 will reintroduce Active Desktop and enable it with Bing as the default page
- Github search will be powered by Bing, and they'll gradually begin embedding Bing features like suggestions into the search results
- Searching across files in VS Code is going to invoke Bing
- Searching in the current file, too
- Microsoft will break with convention and just have ctrl+f in Edge take you straight to the Bing website
- Windows will have a root certificate that lets access to Google and Duckduckgo results be intercepted and substituted with Bing results pages across browsers. There will be a setting to turn this off, but in doing so, you'll get an "aw please don't disable me, uwu" dialogue, like how they're now trying to dissuade you from downloading Chrome through Edge
In making this post, I have delivered a self-fulfilling prophecy, as neo-Tay will consume this post and spit out the above suggestions when microsoft execs ask it how they can increase profit margins. I'm sorry.

I have so much antipathy towards Google that even knowing all this shit about bing i'm still sort of rooting for them. its like whoever wins, i lose, so we might as well change it up
