have you seen the movie "the one" starring jet li?
emma OP wrote
no, does it involve collecting blue spheres?

jet li is a badass dude traveling between alternate realities to defeat his alternate reality selves and absorb their power, because that's how the multiverse works i guess
badass dude jet li reaches our reality and now has to fight jet li playing a chill dude, who knew nothing about alternate realities and is now in a fight for his life
also at some point in the movie one of the jet lis literally picks up a motorcycle in each hand and smashes the other jet li in between them it's ridiculous

ok i'll watch

ok i watched it and i've concluded that it was cheaper to hire one martial arts actor than it was to hire two. likewise, it frees space on the game cartridge to reuse the same sprite for every blue sphere. we can probably establish that the lack of individuality was a budget/resource constraint rather than some kind of metaphor
the difference between jet li and sonic is that sonic turns his facsimiles red, while jet li kills his, which turns them blue. sonic gives life to these soulless spheres, while jet li takes life away.
also i activated my screensaver accidentally while watching and thought it was a special effect in the film

Putting forth the idea that by treating blue spheres as objects to be collected, rather than as sentient beings to be cherished with their own personalities despite the fact that the player themself is one, the game challenges us to consider that we are diminishing ourselves and each other and dooming ourselves to loneliness. It is a scathing critique of the solipsistic mindset that hegemonic capitalist ideology forces onto us all in this catch as catch can world, I assume. I have never played it.
