I commend you for talking to your neighbors despite this, and I appreciate you sharing this experience.
I'm a hypocrite and I haven't, as my neighbors are MAGAs. The relative innocence of "there is a parallel universe of eternal torture that I truly believe exists and I think you're going to it" is funny even if sorrowful

It was almost exactly two years ago we saw what was happening and decided our safest bet was being as visible as possible in the neighborhood. We live in one of the edge areas, more red than blue but not by a large margin. Wouldn’t want to make a bet either way on the neighbors standing up for a random trans woman being harassed. On the other hand, Rain, who they’ve had dozens of conversations with, who lent them sugar on thanksgiving (it really happens lol), who’s family shoveled their walk after the surprise snow, etc. - that is a different story.
I hope, anyway.

I try to talk to my neighbor but he is so dang reclusive. I'm going to try to offer him a burger next time i fire up the grill when it gets warmer.

My one interaction with my neighbours here was i talking on the phone near my window and i looked over and saw him on his balcony giving me a dirty look, i'm assuming because he could see how i was dressed and could hear my very non-passing voice. Maybe the ones on the other side might be chill though idk

I did. They kindly told me about all the food they have stored away that will be available for looting once the rapture comes. All with the clear implication that I was not going to be among the raptured, but I was welcome to their food once it happened.
It is quite possibly the nicest way anyone has ever told me that I was going to hell.
Just to be clear this isn’t intended to discourage people from talking to their neighbors. That conversation was actually the beginning of a decent neighbor relationship. I also have the sense that these conversations have made both of us feel safer. But it was a little disturbing when it happened and hilarious in retrospect.
