I have a friend who was a "heavy" drug user. They were on a variety of drugs in undergrad, they used heroin for four years, and started using kratom as a safer alternative for the past year. They very recently got on suboxone.
They showed me all their targeted Instagram advertisements, including several for isi food-safe NO2 containers, i.e. whippets.
It never occurred to me, but it would entirely make sense that algorithmic targeted advertising would identify drug users and market recreational drugs toward them.
But this kind of sucks right? You can be recovering and Home Depot will be trying to sell you bulk whippets?
Is this a known or discussed phenomena? Does Home Depot know they're in the drugs business?
