marathon was one of those early 3D games which raytraced(!!!) over a planar map, ie the style popularized by doom
it was an early whirlwind of ideas bouncing off one another, and there are still small mapmaking communities to this day
to reboot marathon as a soulless genre fad with no singleplayer campaign is such a self own. they got one chance to use marathon as A Hype Brand and they did that

i dunno i thought it would have been pretty fun. i like extraction shooters
...well that is i thought it might be fun until sony decided a bunch of employees at bungee needed to be laid off this week. now i can't imagine they can produce anything of quality
