I kinda feel like this article is really non-news? From what I'm reading they're just not going to use the "virtual console" branding anymore.

the snes mini has SMRPG, but it is also very playable on an emulator (I know it's just not the same)

theyre branding this specifically as "Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online" [sic] though. why would they do that other than to say that this service (either the library of games or the new features for old games) is specifically for NES games???

My tinfoil take is that this is so that they're not competing with their own products given that the snes mini exists.
