I haven't finished 3 and I haven't started 4, but it appears Deltarune has established itself as Formulaic: In each chapter, Kris and the Gang go on an adventure into the dark world to seal a fountain, with one (1) Very Hard Fight and one (1) Edgy Route.
It seems unbefitting for Undertale's legacy as The Indie Game Which Heralded A New Renaissance to just reuse the same formula for eight games in a row.
But actually that doesn't matter, because Undertales and Deltarunes are so very good. I don't care it's formulaic, I'm laughing and giggling and smiling and dodging bullets. Every chapter could follow the same formula and they would each be GOTY contenders which drive the state of indie games forward. These are genuine vehicles for comedy and they're all jam packed with heart that exudes through tiny bits of gameplay innovation (like the controllers, or the music part).
For all the bad things, I am genuinely happy to be alive at the same time as Toby Fox
