i forget if i mentioned, but it was directly to my wheelchair bound instructor
i knew the word was associated with some sex stuff but i didn't know it was an ableist slur. but then i showed him "yah gimp it's like photoshop" and it was only a few years later that i recoiled again at that memory

Oh no!!!! I don't see how to avoid these kinds of misunderstandings entirely. When we were running Windows 98 my then-teen caught malware that made his machine completely unusable just from a misunderstanding like that.
I'm old enough to have grandkids and I still make the same kind of mistakes. Don't feel too bad about it and I'm glad you're writing the email.
