Formally, it's just the "District of Columbia". "Washington" is the city.
Turned out the United States also used to go by the name "Columbia", i.e. fem!Columbus. That's a fact which is true.
The thing with the name: If the "District of Columbia" became a state, it'd just be "Columbia", which would be confusing for everyone involved. We already have a Columbia IRL. "Georgia" is confusing enough.
"Well, they don't need to name it a long name," you might ask. "They can change what Columbia stands for."
And they did half of that, with a failed 2021 proposal to rename it "Washington, Douglass Commonwealth."
