I am planning out a series of workshops about owning ones digital presence. I want to go over:

  1. Buying your own domain. (Optionally, for your own site or email)
  2. Basics of HTML, CSS
  3. Hosting your own static site (on GitHub Pages, Neocities, VPS?) (Prereq 2, optional 1)
  4. VPS stuff

Where "VPS stuff" is a bit nebulous, a big one, and not the focus of this.

GitHub pages seems like a great candidate for "hosting your own static site".

  • The Bad:
    • Microsoft's monopoly expands. (But it would be bad guidance to push novices away from GitHub anyways)
    • People need to use Git and manage SSH keys. More barrier to entry.
  • The Good:
    • Can use your own domain, but don't need to
    • People need to use Git and manage SSH keys. Lowers the barrier to entry for everything else; good skill to have.

I feel pretty confident that GitHub pages is the way to go, but Neocities is attractive for its culture and for not needing SSH.

I'm wondering:

  • What do you think, between Neocities and GitHub pages?
  • Or, is there a good third option I should consider?

You can but don't need to
