The Birdcage is a 1996 movie about an openly gay couple who are the owners of a gay drag club. The main point of drama in the film is that their son is courting the daughter of a conservative US Senator, and they suddenly find themselves being thrust back into the closet, so as not to compromise their sons romance.
For a mainstream movie about gay culture from the 90s, I expected to have my guard up. But this movie punches up a lot more often than it punches down, and ended on a note that had me feeling :D :D :D :D :D
I would advise you not to watch the trailer; it spoils one of the best moments in the movie. It's the kind of spoiler which would recontextualize the whole thing.
And there's a bit of racism played for laughs, and it's another movie focusing entirely on white gays, but I imagine this must have been a "win" at the time of release. I was a bit surprised to see the f-slur used liberally (albeit not derogatorily).

Mainstream 90s gay movies are often shockingly good, and all have worse reputations than they deserve because they got dropped into a rotten cultural moment. Philadelphia and The Crying Game come to mind.
