So I'm on a little project to cut down my habitual internet use a bit. Not too much actually, more to reduce procrastination than anything else. I've unfollowed people, channels, pages and profiles mercilessly. I've noticed there's lots of basically decent and talented people I have no time for.
Feeds are just a tool to lure people to use their services more, or more precisely, longer to serve more ads. To empty my Reddit feed, I unsubscribed from each and every subreddit. I had in practice pared my use down to about two or three subs with decent communities anyways and surely I can write manually every time I actually want to visit those communities.
The front page is now entirely empty. I like it! It feels slow and cozy, like reading a newspaper instead of this fastpaced number hell full of metrics to "engage" you.
So maybe go unfollow people, pages, profiles and channels yourself, if you'd feel like it could be helpful.

Why I wrote this: social media is a big part of contemporary lives yet I don't really see much in the way how to use it well as an individual, save for fear mongering and counter mongering. I remember /u/devtesla posting an article once on Rihanna's social media use which seemed pretty cool and aspirational and which was pretty much about embracing less.
