I bought my bro SMP as a birthday gift and got to play it.
So it's pretty much an updated amalgam of Sonic 1, 2 and 3. The "story mode" plays very similarly except the stages are much larger with more exploration on the table. There is a competition mode that lets you race stages with up to four players and a kind of a speed running mode where you can compete against the rest of the world. This mode let's you restart stages with a press of a button - how nice of the developers!
I think it's very much geared towards the fans, but anyone who likes 2d platformers probably will enjoy it.
