so I finished the game last night with Razz and I spent the last two hours in varying states of emotional distress. what the fuck is this game. nothing makes sense. I went from sincerely enjoying it to enjoying hating it it's a lot. It's a lot a lot.
I'm going to spoil it, because I need to get these thoughts into writing. be warned lol
You break out of prison really early in A Way Out, like way earlier than I thought. That part is really just setup for the rest of the game, which seems to mostly be about like, fleeting emotional moments with your family kind of stuff, with some like light co-op stealth and puzzly stuff.
Anyway your goal is to kill a dude who stole a diamond or something and got one of you in prison. You track down his location (Mexico. Literally all you get is Mexico and you know where to go.) and then suddently the game becomes a mediocre last gen co-op cover shooter. Like it's so bad. It's so bad. It's so clumsy and unfun and weirdly hard and UGGGGG why. why. why. I was so mad lol
At the end of this way too long sequence you kill the guy in pretty much an exact recreation of scarface lmao
Then there is THE BIG TWIST!! one of the dudes you've been playing as is A COP!! (I played this guy lol, always knew I was a cop) betrayal!!!! You get a flashback where the cop has a cop mustache. They try to explain things as like, the cop is avenging his brother or something. And apparently the way to do it is to go undercover as a prisoner, escape to Mexico, kill a bunch of dudes like it's a 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, then arest the guy you've been working with the whole time? Like there was a part where you're in a truck shooting at cops chasing you like I killed a lot of cops lol.
Anyway the reason for this is so you go from working together to a section where you try to kill each other, and that's kinda legit even if it's still not a good shooter. Here's the part where like, I kinda lost my mind: Razz killed me in the firefight, so afterwards we get to see like, my funeral? and Razz's character gets to have an emotional moment with his family. Like this is what the entire game was leading up to, and I checked the winner of the firefight changes the ending. That's so much lol
Like I'm imagining now a Counter Strike game where like, the losers get funerals and the winners go home to their families and that plays out for every single round lol
anyway this game has some actually really good parts (like any part where you can just walk around and talk to people rules, there's like minigames and stuff too) and some parts that are fucking awful and nothing actually coheres cause the writing is terrible. But uhhh it was incredibly fun 10/10
