i like foobar2000 and mpc-hc but yeah they do look pretty utilitarian don't they

(you can also make foobar2000 look cool god knows there's hundreds of skins and whatnot but i think the spirit of the post is that it's not cool by default and whatnot)
(also actually a lot of the more popular foobar skins are "clean" ones so yeah hmmm)
I agree, I feel like there's a lot of design space that's been flattened by how tied to media consumption is to software (YouTube, Netflix, Spotify) and hardware platforms (specific brands of smart TVs etc.).
