i think this is stupid. just learned that the "epidural" space is actually the space between the 2 layers of the dura of the spine, so its not actually epi-dural, which explains why some sources also call it the peridural space, except that's actually also wrong because peri- just means around so it would basically mean the same as epidural, so there are yet other sources still that refer to it as the intradural space instead, which is actually much more appropriate. but it gets worse because the "epidural" space in the brain also exists! and is actually above the dura, which means the name is actually appropriate, but which also means it is NOT continuous with the epidural space of the spine because it's not actually the same space despite having the same name ??? so because of this some sources have decided to refer to it as the extradural space instead, which i guess does actually fit fine. but the original name was fine too !!! also just to make this slightly worse there is also a "peridural" space in the brain as well, its just empty normally apart from the dural sinuses but if this is analogous to the "epidural" compartment of the spine and "epidural" is already taken to refer to the extradural space then what are u supposed to call this.

oh and also im not done yet i have to make this even worse again!! there is actually no consensus on where the epidural space in the spine actually is and whether it is outside or within the dura lol (described by radiopaedia as "contentious"). so what are they actually doing when they give u epidural anesthesia? i have no idea! ive even found one paper comparing "intradural" to "epidural" anesthesia which would make no sense assuming the definition ive determined is mostly agreed upon because those would be like, the same space???

i'm tired. this is why i hate taking notes on anatomy because i always run into inconsistencies like this and i just? cant get my brain around it?? like i cant just accept that it makes no sense and move on because i need to understand it to remember it otherwise my head just feels like its going to explode because i dont understand
