I am moving and in search of a good desk, but nothing came up. I don't understand why there are so many >$500 desks which are little more than a big surface. It's nice, but how is Ikea getting away with the Uppspel, which is a $830 USD desk on a stand?
I was walking through Ikea, my stomach filled with the flesh of a salmon that had personally been hugged by an Ikea worker, and the idea of a good desk far from my mind. But then, the Fredde desk caught my eye, blew my mind, and checked my boxes. It checked off everything on the list.
Indentation, recessed layers, shelves on top of shelves, even a little shelf to put your desktop on. It's like they took the wisdom of the 90s computer rooms. There are even little pegs on the top shelf railing, such as for headphones. Fuck. That's a good desk. According to Ikea, they "enlisted a gamer designer of their own".
I proceeded through Ikea, making a note to research the desk later, thinking it would pair well with a 6 to 7 foot circular rug (wood floors + chair = bad time).
When, there it was: The Gamer Rug. Not the solid black I would have wanted, but it was exactly what I wanted.
At this point, I'm realizing I'm the fantasy user story. Writing my experiences makes me sound like an Ikea commercial. Let me just check if Ikea has any controversies... "Child deaths", "IKEA France spying", "Involvement of IKEA founder with Nazi sympathizer", "Horse meat meatballs"
Oh geeze. This post has a new tone I think.
Well, it appears Ikea's great office furniture is because of their alliance with The Republic of Gamers, including a commericial with their "designer" with music that sounds very much "Halo 3".
I'm used to "Gamer" branding usually being trash, and thankfully, the rest of Ikea's Gamer Stuff seems not great. The Matchspel chair is considered bad, their Gamer Drink Coasters seem silly, and their Gamer Station looks really impractical for most people. Their Gamer Storage Unit Trolly seems to imagine most people keep their tablets and game consoles off somewhere, not anchored to their television. I think I'd get use out of any trolly, but I don't understand the Gamers marketing.
I have yet to actually sit at the Fredde, since I still need a chair, so my review is coming later. Maybe it'll actually suck. I built it a little bit incorrectly (when the instructions show someone using their fingers to tighten, they mean it; research suggests this is a significant problem) so I am worried it will become wobbly in due time.
tldr: Play Outer WIlds using Ikea's latest Gamers Furnitures
real TLDR: Ikea's Fredde desk and Gamer Rug from their "Gamer Furniture" merketing seems to have met all of my needs, which is a first-time success for Gamer marketing. I feel a little sick.
