Did anyone catch NPR announcing Sam Alito's retirement? They then retracted it.

This was by Nina Totenberg, so there's probably something to this. She might have written this in advance (for speculation Alito and/or Thomas might retire) and accidentally published it, or they might have inside information.
Samuel Alito is 76 and Clarence Thomas is 78, and Republicans are anticipating that the Democrats will win the midterms in November. These justices retiring now would give them the chance to rush through new nominees before they lose the votes to do so.
This isn't surprising, even in 2024 people were talking about how Trump could easily get three new justices from old Bush justices retiring (they'd be in their 70s), and maybe more (depending on how many of the liberal justices die from natural causes or assassinations).
