I just realized the way this is worded makes it sound like I was about to defend the institution.

I wasn't trying to be funny, I just wanted to preface what I was saying with the title, and keep the pretty horrible specific fact in the body.

I didn't interpret this as you defending slavery. I feel similarly when I learn about the era and the era immediately after. When I learn a new thing about slavery, it's most often the case that it's a surprising and negative nuance, like this. Twenty two is even lower than I would have guessed.

Oh just the format of the title being like "of course I never thought slavery was good. But...." Is the format of an op ed about to defend some heinous thing.

I think jstpst is a place where you can expect a reasonable level of good will readings, don't worry

This post is apropos of recent comments in the media.

What comments? I am asking sincerely-- I've missed the horrible context.

Trump made a swipe at the Smithsonian, saying it focuses too much on how bad slavery was. So yeah, he's targeting museums now.

Ah yeah, I know about the Smithsonian, but not that he's (again) making comments that slavery was basically okay. Cool timeline we live in
