i thought it would be safe if i disabled the sim (as well as wifi calling) and turned on airplane mode before i popped out the sim tray

well i'm not really trying to switch to another sim, more like inserting and removing a microsd card from my android... so yeah whoever thought it's a good idea to put the microsd slot in the same place as a sim tray, i hope you get gapped to gensokyo as youkai food or something

My phone didn't detect the SIM card through multiple reboots (not the restart option itself but full power off and power on), and no matter which slot I used (the phone is a dual SIM)... Managed to avoid disaster somehow by putting rubbing alcohol on the SIM's contacts though. But I did notice that the electrical contacts look duller than usual

i would have guessed it was more of a statue of liberty problem, where the copper corrodes in contact with open air. but apparently the contacts are supposed to be gold-plated, so that surely wouldn't be the case.
