so a while ago there was a free arena shooter game called Warsow that was based on the quake 2 engine. it played like a mix between quake and UT with a cel shaded art style that was supposed to be inspired by Jet Set Radio but it ended up looking kind of different (and imo not that great). it was a lot of fun though, the gameplay was fantastic, you didn't need a fancy expensive gaming computer to run it at high FPS, the weapons and movement were pretty well-balanced, and there were quite a number of good maps available, including some fan-made ports of classic maps from UT and quake like aerowalk, campgrounds, and grendelkeep.

well, after a lot of infighting in the dev team development eventually ceased and its player base largely abandoned it. i wasn't playing it at the time so i don't really know the details. but now a new group of people have forked development since the source code was freely licensed, and they've replaced all the copyright-encumbered sound and graphics assets with free ones, and they've released it on steam for free.

it's still a lot of fun! they've added some nice new features to the client, the new graphics aren't perfect but look a lot better than the old cel style (imo), and a new player base has formed around it. they've got a lot of planned features in development but it already feels like an improved version of Warsow. i've been able to hop into frenzied FFA matches with sub 100 ping every night this week, without needing to try to organize a PUG on discord or irc. it's a lot of fun and it costs nothing.

recommended if you like arena FPS games or are curious about them. and if you wanna play together let me know!
