Really good book, strong recommend.
It has the vibe of a star track. The whole book has a consistent goal they're working towards, but each chapter is a mostly self-contained vignette and it's more focused on the relationships between the characters than the whole mission the crew is on. The character journeys are the whole book, the mission itself is kind of just there in the background happening.
The last hundred pages or so had me welling up, really powerful emotional writing. I really like this book. I am glad I read it.
Later edit to add:
I like the big themes that center around found family, learning to live with people, finding your place in the world, learning to live with different worldviews. The opening section of the book talks about Humans, who had split into two major factions who bitterly hated each other, starting to heal and come back together as they branch out into the universe. One of the book's main characters is fleeing her birth family because of something they did and wants to start out fresh, and she ends up joining the crew of a space ship populated by a bunch of people from different backgrounds and alien species, finding her place within them. The rest of the book follows different situations, as I said each chapter is mostly self contained, of the characters either learning to diffuse tensions or live with differences, or not, and seeing how that plays out.
I don't have anything smart to say about it, I just really liked it.
