Mother 3 used this to great effect (all three games have it actually). Far too tragic to describe this one as dessert though, it's the dark version of the trope.
After your last real fight against Porky, the party has to fight the Masked Man - Lucas's brother Claus, whose mind has been under Porky's control for so long that even after Porky's defeat, he's too far gone.
The fight begins with an AoE that wipes out everyone but Lucas, and if you try to revive anyone he will just instakill them again. Lucas will not act, if you select any fight commands he cannot bring himself to raise a hand against his brother. Every turn, their mother Hinawa's voice is heard begging them to stop fighting. Claus's attacks become more restrained, struggling internally, until he stops attacking for several turns.
Eventually, Claus removes his mask and gathers his strength to fire one last lightning attack. It bounces off Lucas's Franklin Badge, a key item that deflects lightning. Which means it bounces right back at Claus and kills him instantly.
I love how this fight robs the player of all agency to force the sense of hopelessness, frustrate you with the fact that you're playing a battle you can't even do anything in. You have to just sit there and watch the tragedy unfold. There's nothing you can do. He's too far gone.

I wish I didn't read that-- I'm going to have to go play Earthbound and Mother 3 for real sometime. That is fantastic.
